Dancing Satyr and Churches
In Mazara Del Vallo you have to see the Dancing Satyr, a bronze sculpture which was found in 1998 in the Sicilian channel. Unfortunately taking photos was not allowed, but you can see what it looks like here [ancientworlds.net]. The detail is amazing and the sculpture seems to exert an almost hypnotic ecstasy with its glowing eyes.
Erice is well worth a visit just for its amazing view to the sea and surrounding landscape, and of course the small castle built in the most impossible location.
Close to Piazza Armerina there are two great reasons for a visit. First of all, the restaurant Al Fogher [alfogher.net], which was probably the best restaurant we have been to in Sicily. Secondly, there is as small UNESCO world heritage site called Villa Romana del Casale, which boasts an impressive villa that was built in the 4th century AD. The entire floor of the villa is made of remarkable mosaics, with stunning detail.
Palermo has many lovely cathedrals, but nothing tops the amazing cathedral of Monreale, which is ornamented with astonishing golden mosaics at an unbelievable scale. I have never been more impressed by any other cathedral.
